Get Your HVAC Ready for Summer

Spring is here! That means that the summer heat is just around the corner. Right now is the perfect time to start getting your HVAC system ready for the coming weather. Taking these few simple steps now will ensure that your system is running optimally when the more extreme temperatures settle in. Here are 4 simple steps you can take to make sure your air conditioner is ready for the summer season.

1. Schedule Routine Maintenance

Spring and fall are the ideal times to have routine maintenance done on your HVAC system since they’re usually the milder seasons. If your system needs repairs, the downtime won’t leave you in the freezing cold or the blistering heat. Regular maintenance helps ensure that your system will keep working optimally throughout the more extreme seasons.

During a routine maintenance appointment, a technician will complete all of the regular upkeep steps needed to keep your system running smoothly. Often this will include changing filters, cleaning the coils, ensuring proper drainage, inspecting your ductwork, and more! Keeping your HVAC system in great working condition is a big job, and there’s no one better qualified to tackle it than a trained technician.

2. Test the Cooling Function

Don’t wait until the summer heat is here to make sure your air conditioner works! Turn the system on once or twice to make sure that the system is functional. Performing a quick test now will give you plenty of time to get your system serviced if needed before the first wave of summer heat hits. The same is true for your home’s heating system. Test it in the late fall before the chill sets in.

Being proactive will help keep you and your family comfortable no matter the weather. Check out our guide on how to make your AC run better for even more information on keeping your system running smoothly this summer.

3. Invest in a Smart Thermostat

We’ve talked time and again about The Benefits of Switching to a Smart Thermostat. Well, we’re talking about them again! Theres never a bad time to switch your home over to a smart thermostat, but the spring is a GREAT time to make the change.

One of the biggest and most obvious benefits of using a smart thermostat is that they save you money. They allow you to set your temperature higher or lower when you’re away from home to save power. That way, your system isn’t working overtime to keep an empty house comfortable. You can even set a schedule so that the system automatically changes temperatures after you leave for work and before you get home. Smart thermostats make sure that your house is always comfortable when you’re home, and saving energy while you’re away. As an added bonus, a smart thermostat allows you to use a smart device to control the temperature of your home from anywhere! If your schedule changes, you’re able to manually adjust the temperature to be comfortable by the time you get home.

4. Make Sure Vents and Units are Clear

This tip is pretty self-explanatory! If you have furniture or clutter blocking your HVAC vents, then air can’t circulate properly. Make sure that there is plenty of clearance around any air HVAC vents in your home. You can also take this time to give the vents a wipe-down with a damp cloth as part of your spring cleaning routine if you notice they’re looking a little dusty.

For your outside units, clear away any debris that may have built up over the winter to ensure optimal airflow. Rake away dead leaves and grass trimmings, trim any bushes around or over your A/C unit, and make sure that there’s nothing blocking the fans inside of the unit. Small animals have been known to build nests inside outdoor HVAC boxes. Perform a quick check to make sure that isn’t the case and save yourself from expensive repairs later!
